'Salts were quickest off the blocks and took an early lead from a tapped penalty and good support for a try in the corner, and the home backs were a constant threat as they searched for a second, but a number of chances were missed. Spartans clawed their way back into the game and a rare visit into the 'Salts half saw Jack Sharpe cross for a fine try, and a shell - shocked 'Salts found themselves having to defend. Simple play from the Men In Black was rewarded with a try for the forwards, and minutes later Alex Garbett crossed for another to give Spartans an unlikely lead. 'Salts hit back again and their quick backs nearly reached the line, but a mistake at the base of the resulting scrum saw them pounce for the try and leave the half time score 10 - 17.
The second half saw a good contest continue, with 'Salts having just having the advantage of age and experience to shade territory and possession. Good discipline from Spartans saw them stay in the game for long periods, but 'Salts backs were proving a handful and two quick tries saw them regain the lead. Spartans showed their determination as they seized an interception and raced away for a score and conversion to snatch a two point lead, but with plenty of time on the clock 'Salts were able to respond with a try. Once more the Men In Black hit back and the last five minutes belonged to the visitors, and as time ran out Spartans were well worth their two bonus points.
