The opening fifteen minutes were fairly even, with 'Salts shading the territory but Spartans keeping the ball well. A mistake on their 10m line was seized on by 'Salts, who moved the ball well to score in the corner. Working hard to match the bigger 'Salts forwards, Spartans were kept in their own half but another mistake in the tackle area saw 'Salts move the ball to the right again for a second try and a 14 point lead. Again Spartans responded and managed to creep into the 'Salts half, where some good pressure led to a penalty to give the home side a foothold in the game as half time arrived.
The second half began very well for the visitors however, and once again the 'Salts forwards kept Spartans in their own half. For twenty minutes a stalemate ensued until 'Salts broke through after some typically robust play, but Spartans were not going to give up and hit back with a try of their own. In the final quarter the game opened up a lot more as both sides began to tire, but it was 'Salts who had the better supply of ball to use and added two tries. Not to be outdone, Spartans had the last word as (ironically) they played their best rugby in the last five minutes to finish off with a fine try of their own.
