The early exchanges were even as both sides renewed some old acquaintances, and heavy duty tackling from both sides saw some intent declared. As play progressed it was clear that neither side would run away with the contest, and so it fell to the respective kickers to duel for the honours. Spartans' Tom Hardy landed a fine brace to put Spartans ahead, but home fullback Dan Poulton proved equal to the task by landing a couple of his own. With the home side dominant in the lineout but the visitors shading the scrums it was a player's game, but the vocal home touchline remained enthralled by the competition. As half time approached the Men In Black crept ahead with Hardy adding a third penalty, but the home side were far from done and at half time it was anybody's game.
The second half began with the Streetly outfit in determined mood, and the superb Poulton gave them a 12 - 9 lead with two outstanding penalty kicks. Spartans had other ideas however, and a period of sustained pressure saw Vesey forced to defend for long periods. Gradually the home defence was worn down and eventually the referee lost patience with the home antics at the scrummage, awarding Spartans a penalty try to restore their lead. Further pressure from the kick off saw Spartans add another three points from the now reliable boot of Tom Hardy, but Vesey were far from finished and former Samoan international Zak Feanauti made sure his side stayed in touch as Poulton added his fifth penalty. As the duel continued between the two kickers Tom Hardy landed a tricky penalty to give the visitors a ten point cushion, but Dan Poulton responded in kind before crucially missing an opportunity. As the clock ticked away with just seven points between the sides, a steal of the ball by replacement Dai Owen saw Spartans' Stuart Totty release the youngest player on the field Alex Garbett to scorch home from the halfway line, and with Hardy adding the simple conversion Spartans were done and dusted.
