Hampered by the travel arrangements, Spartans were slow to start and were well and truly under the cosh for the first fifteen minutes, but having stemmed the Wolves tide an eventual break into home territory saw Alex Garbett continue where he left off last week, dancing through the defence to score beneath the sticks. With Hardy converting Spartans held an unlikely lead, and true to form Wolves stormed back. The taller, older and heavier home forwards were well supported by some hard running quality backs, but some over elaborate play led to mistakes and Spartans stayed in the game. The dam finally broke when Wolves' former Worcester centre crossed in the corner for a fine try, and with a penalty added soon afterwards the favourites had the lead they expected. On the stroke of half time and against the run of play, Spartans produced some good ball and young Garbett found himself in space on the only dry section of the pitch. Confronted by two defenders, his only option was to chip and chase, which he did and won the race to touch down, Hardy again converting.
The half time chat to the home side was still ringing in Spartans' ears as they kicked off the second period, and with Wolves looking for an early score they threw the ball around at will, allowing Spartans' Stuart Totty to intercept and glide beneath the posts. Slipping as he approached the kick, Tom Hardy somehow missed the conversion and Wolves still sensed an expected victory. Time and again the home side launched their big forwards and fast backs against their smaller opponents, only to be met by dedicated, determined and downright stubborn defence from the Men In Black who simply refused to buckle. As Wolves became increasingly frustrated Spartans grew in confidence, and moving the ball well Alex Danish was held up by the throat just five metres out. Spartans elected to scrum the penalty, and after two home infringements drove over for the bonus point try. Wolves remained committed to the cause and continued to attack strongly, crossing wide out for a late try, but by then it was too late and Spartans had earned a fully deserved but unexpected victory against a league front runner.
