KC’s saw very little of the ball in the opening ten minutes as the home side tried to play some rugby, and an early Spartans penalty gave them the lead. However, KC's got into their stride and hit back when they worked the narrow side with some large forwards making ground for an equally large centre who was put in for a try. After a huge defensive effort from Spartans a harsh yellow card reduced the home side to fourteen men and KC’s extended their lead to 10-3 when ex Worcester No 8 Wilkinson went over. Before the conversion could be attempted torrential rain, hail and lightning took the players off the pitch but the storm abated after a ten minute break and play resumed. The now swamp conditions suited KC's perfectly and their bigger, older and heavier forwards were solid at the scrum and lineout and effective at the breakdown. Right on the interval KCs added a third try which was close enough to the posts to convert for a 17-3 halftime advantage.

As the second half progressed Spartans were very much in the game and tried to run the ball from all areas of the field, but although they had a couple of spells of pressure the Men In Black could not make progress in the mud and good KC’s defence forced mistakes. Spartans remained enthusiastic about their play but injuries to key men and errors at crucial moments proved costly. KCs were happy to use the wind and their forwards to good effect, but Spartans restricted them to just one try in the second half. As time ran out a patched up Spartans continued to try and play but KC’s remained in control, using their seasoned forwards to see out the game.
