Coventry Dunlop 0, Spartans 72

Keen to close the gap on league leaders Rugby Lions and Old Silhillians, Spartans brought some added intensity and, capitalising on some good fortune along the way, ran out comfortable winners by 72 points to nil.

Dunlop started the game brightly, retaining possession well, using their strong pack to good effect. Against the run of play, Spartans managed to capitalise on a turnover and Matty Southam again showed his finishing instincts to dance his way through the Dunlop defence and score in the corner.

This set the tone for the rest of the match and despite Dunlop showing plenty of heart throughout the game, luck was always on Spartans side. Matt Southam went on to score another two tries and was joined on the score sheet by Alex Bennett, who grabbed a brace, Andy Bennett, Andy Bushell, Jack Sharpe and Jamie Humpage.

Special mention goes to Jamie Owen, who having made himself an integral part of the 1st XV in this breakthrough year, scored his first try. And finally young Joe Westwood, a rising star at the club. Making his senior debut, Joe came on to boss the closing stages of the match from fly half, finishing the game by supporting Perry Bates Powell’s rampaging run, collecting the offload and crossing the whitewash for a try on his debut.
