Rugby Lions went ahead with an early penalty but their lead was short lived as Spartans tested the Lions defence, Andy Bushell found a gap in the middle and touched down for a home try.
As expected, Lions reacted to going behind and after working their way down field to the 5 meter line, put their huge pack to good use and scored from a driving maul.
Spartans defence seemed up for whatever Lions could throw at it and patience paid dividends when the home side capitalised on some possession, some nice hands put Foulds through another gap in the centre for a score. Both sides shared some possessions before vice captain Jack Sharpe made a blistering run, Spartans moved the ball quickly and Mike Foulds delivered a great hand off to score his second out wide, 20-8 at half time.
The second half started in the same vein as the first with some fierce tackling going in from both teams, a superb break by Alex Garbett took Spartans to the 5 meter line for a home scrum, they retained the ball and a few phases later Michael Blair went under the posts for the first score of the half, Tom Hardy kicked the conversion to make it 27-8.
Lots of home pressure both in attack and defence saw some frustration from the away side but as play continued Matt Southam made a great break, Garbett continued the move putting Michael Blair away for his second try. Unfortunately, frustration crept in again and the Lions big number 4 took a 10minute rest but the score board remained 34-8 at the whistle for a great Spartans victory.
