Spartans started the game with the upper hand, showing good control at both scrum and line out their forwards started to show dominance over the home side. After a period of sustained pressure in both set pieces skipper Michael Bennett found himself on the end of a driving maul to open the scoring. Pinley fought back straight away with a break by one of their back line that levelled the score at 7-7. The men in black then restored their concentration and applied the pressure again, this time young Matt Perry finding some space after a series of phases and putting the men in black ahead once more. Pinley showed their resolve and took their chances when it counted, Spartans saw their defence fall asleep once more and Pinley gladly accepted another score, this time unconverted. With the home crowd coming into voice Spartans knew they had to go into half time with a lead, the away pack were still on top which created space for the ball to go wide and Jack Sharpe went through the gap to score under the posts. Half time score 12-21.
The second half was eventful to say the least, 2 mins in saw Tom Hardy the Spartans fly half take a trip to a&e to obtain stitches to a nasty head wound. Shortly after, one of the Pinley backs sustained a neck injury, this saw both teams go back into the changing rooms whilst an ambulance was called to asses the injured player. When both sides finally reappeared it was the home side that started the brighter. Pinley camped themselves in the Spartans half and retained the ball very well, after a couple of quick penalties they found themselves well and truly back in the game at 18-21. Spartans dug deep and for long periods defended very well, but with the home crowd behind them Pinley kept chipping away and they were finally rewarded with a converted try in what was the last play of the game.
Although Spartans didn't get the result they wanted they were much improved from the previous week and can take a great deal from the match. They would like to wish the injured Pinley player a speedy recovery.
This week Spartans play hosts to Nuneaton Old Eds. All support will be greatly received.
