The opening two minutes saw Nun's start quickly and strongly, with the impressive Tay Brown crossing the line for an early lead and serving a warning to Spartans that this was going to be another hard afternoon. Spartans woke up and responded well, but the game became disjointed with two delays for injuries, and having to be moved onto another pitch then restarted with uncontested scrums. The resulting game of extended rugby league left the home side struggling for a while, and some smart play from 'Nuns saw them add a penalty. Further scruffy play followed and for a while it was stalemate, but Spartans eventually found the key to the door and Matthew Perry raced in for a fine try. Half time arrived with no further scores and the streetwise 'Nuns were in control.
Spartans started the second half well and a couple of early surges took them close to 'Nuns line, but some clever defence snuffed out the few chances that existed and it was back to rugby league for long periods. Try as hard as they might, Spartans couldn't break through again and the three wise men of Holes, Jones & Kalnins ran the show for 'Nuns, using the amended laws to great effect. With 'Nuns adding a penalty Spartans pressed and pressed for a bonus point but despite a lot of huffing & puffing the Nuneaton house didn't fall down, and as the light began to fail mistakes became more frequent. Attempting to run the ball from their own line, Spartans were hit by a second try from Nuns uncontested scrum, and an accurate kicker landed a mysterious penalty for the visitors final score. True to their beliefs Spartans refused to give up and had the last word with a forwards' try in the half light, but it was a deserved win for Nuneaton at the end of the day.
Spartans' final game of 2014 takes place at the Coppice Lane headquarters against Old Coventrians, kick off 2.15pm.
