Spartans 36, Old Leamingtonions 10

The first half saw Spartans kick off down the slope knowing that they had to put in a solid start, but it was the visitors who struck the first blow when they took their opportunity to kick at goal after some early ill discipline by the men in black. Spartans kicked off again and started to show some dominance in the set piece, after a period of early pressure Spartans were rewarded with a score through full back Matt Southam when he got on the end of a well worked move started by the home pack going forward at scrum time. The remainder of the first half saw both sides contributing well but it was Spartans who managed a further score, this time winger Jamie Parker taking the outside to put score at 14-3 at the half time whistle.

With Spartans going up the slope in the 2nd 40 they knew that they could not defend the score line and they showed their intentions early with the pack taking the game to the visitors at both scrum and line out time, this time captain Mike Bennett got the ball down over the line off the back of a scrum. Although the game was played in good spirits Spartans had a high penalty count and soon found themselves down to 14 men after loosing a back row, Old Lems' capitalised and scored a fine try of their own to close the gap. The last 20mins saw Spartans pull away as Matt Southam added a further two scores to achieve a hat rick and lock Andy Bennett got his name on the score sheet when he found himself at the back of a driving maul.

This week Spartans travel to unbeaten Bridgnorth in the cup. All support will be warmly welcomed.
