After a steady start, Spartans soon settled in to their rhythm with early scores from Howell, Haig and Woodwork and extras added by Stewart Snr. With the visitors dominating in the pack, St Leonards looked to take the fizz out of the game by insisting that the scrums went uncontested.
Working off a static platform, Spartans pressed hard to liven up an increasingly drab spectacle. Sweet hands in the opposition 22, sent captain Norton over for a try, and then Stewart Jnr got on to the end of an overlap for his touchdown.
The industrious Haig went looking for work, and in the closing period added 2 more tries of his own to complete his hatrick.
A late score from St Leonards put their mark on the scoreboard and ensured that the winning margin was less than 50 points.”
