Spartans U8s were back in festival action at Sutton Coldfield Rugby Club, fielding two teams, Swords and Shields, in a morning packed with competitive rugby, teamwork, and memorable moments. Building on recent performances, the players showed growing confidence, strong support play, and a real understanding of how to work together as a unit.

Swords

Ben P, Millie, Ethan, Finlay, Ben W, George (C)

The Swords played with great cohesion, moving the ball well and supporting each other across the pitch. Their ability to stay connected in both attack and defence allowed them to create opportunities and apply consistent pressure.

George led from the front with a captain’s performance full of intent and quality. His highlight moment was a superb individual try that brought the loudest cheer of the day from the sidelines — a brilliant piece of skill and determination that lifted everyone watching.

Ben P continued his strong running form, carrying the ball with purpose and consistently gaining ground. His direct approach kept the opposition defence on the back foot.

Millie delivered some phenomenal support play, always in the right place at the right time. One particular take seemed to defy the laws of physics, drawing admiration from coaches and parents alike — a fantastic example of awareness and anticipation.

Ethan showed great consistency, combining determined running with solid defensive contributions. His work rate and focus helped keep the team organised throughout.

Finlay worked tirelessly, supporting play and making key contributions in defence. His effort and willingness to get involved in every phase stood out.

Ben W continued to impress following his recent debut, using his pace effectively and showing growing confidence in both attack and defence.

Shields
Jacob, Theo, Erin (C), Dylan, Edward, Eddie J, Eddie T

The Shields demonstrated resilience and teamwork, growing stronger as the festival progressed. Their defensive shape and communication improved with each game, making them a tough side to break down.

Erin (C) led the team with confidence and determination, balancing strong running with smart decision-making. Her leadership helped guide the team through some competitive matches.

Edward produced a superb all round display, particularly in defence, where his organisation and awareness stood out. His leadership qualities were clear to see, helping to marshal the team and keep them structured under pressure.

Theo brought energy and physicality, driving the team forward with purposeful runs and staying fully engaged throughout.

Eddie J impressed with his enthusiasm and willingness to get involved, making positive contributions and growing in confidence as the games progressed.

Eddie T worked hard throughout, showing great effort and commitment, particularly in defence where his focus and determination were key.

Jacob added energy and intent, getting involved in all areas of the game and contributing well to the team’s overall performance.

Across both teams, the Spartans U8s delivered another highly encouraging performance. With standout individual moments, excellent teamwork, and a clear enjoyment of the game, the players continue to develop and grow with every outing.

A Personal Note

As this festival brings to a close the tag rugby chapter of this group’s journey, it feels like the perfect moment to reflect. From those early sessions to now, the progress made by every single player has been remarkable.

On a personal note, myself and the rest of the coaching team could not be prouder of how our little Spartans have developed over the last two years. It has been a real privilege to be part of their journey, and there is genuine excitement about where their rugby journeys can go next.
