Spartans sneaked into the national cup last four after an interesting encounter with a serious Stafford side in a game which promised much but delivered little other than a decision on who went forward into the semi - finals.
Both sides seemed keen to enjoy the break from league rugby, almost treating the game as a freindly fixture, and a gentlemanly spirit filled the air as the contest measured up. A bulky Stafford clearly sought some forward dominance but the smaller, lighter home side got to grips with them and tried to move the ball. Stafford had all the early pressure but couldn't break through, whilst Spartans made the most of their chances and scored a truly beautiful try through Andrew Bushell via the middle and two in the corner from Matt Southam and Alex Garbett for a 17 - 0 lead. Stafford followed with an equally ambitious style and ran several penalties rather than using their superior height in the lineout, but finally opted for three points from the tee to open their account. Both sides continued to play some remarkably relaxed rugby and Spartans bagged a penalty from Tom Hardy, but Stafford had the last word of the half with a fine try to leave a ten point gap at half time.
With each side sensing there was much more to do, a period of trench warfare saw two packs scrap for the upper hand and Spartans edged the early skirmishes. Stafford forwards Cal Hoy and Neil Green showed great promise but two close range tries from unseen black warriors up front saw the lead stretch to 20 points, only for Stafford to hit back from an interception and make life uncomfortable. Given what was at stake, a passage of truly dull play followed where both sides failed to make or take chances, and for once in his life Tom Hardy had a miserable afternoon with the boot. The Men In Black added their final try after a forwards surge and glorious swallow dive from Perry Bates - Powell, but Stafford were determined to have the last word and cashed in with an excellent yet ultimately consolation try to end the proceedings.
Spartans return to their league campaign this week and face a very tough examination away at Southam. (2.15pm).
