Malvern’s late season winning streak continued in a very competitive game against Spartans, and from the first whistle the home side showed their intent by feeding a very quick and powerful winger. With both sides wanting to play a running game Spartans moved the ball upfield and into the Malvern 22, but despite good territory errors were made and the home side responded by taking the ball from their own line down the left for a fine try and conversion. Malvern continued their high-intensity play and Spartans were having trouble coming to terms with their rugby as they added a penalty and a further try, and at 22-0 Malvern appeared to be cruising. However, Spartans stuck to their guns and free from mistakes the ball was again moved upfield to snatch a valuable score in the corner just before half time.
The second half saw a rejuvenated Spartans awarded a string of penalties and after a punishing series of scrums the referee finally awarded the penalty try, the conversion bringing the score back to 22-12. With their tails up, the Men In Black were looking a different side from the first half and they created a few nerves amongst the large home support as they ran in another converted try to bring them within 3 points. Malvern were rattled but some stout defence kept the visitors out and once more the outstanding home winger proved the difference. A Spartans penalty was poorly hit and failed to find touch, landing in the arms of a waiting Malvern lock who put his support in for Malvern’s try bonus and an eight point gap. Still Spartans refused to lie down and they responded with another converted try to bring the gap back to a solitary point, but a stray pass was picked up and chipped ahead for Malvern to gather and score restoring the eight point lead. A final show of defiance saw Spartans back on the attack and with time up they forced another penalty which they kicked to secure two well deserved bonus points and the home supporters generously applauded the two teams that had served up an enthralling match.
Spartans now go into their final league game on 22nd Aprilaway at a resurgent Barkers Butts.
