Spartans made the long and unfamiliar journey to Cleobury Mortimer expecting nothing less than tough and physical encounter, and were not disappointed. In cold conditions, Cleobury used their strong pack and centres to good effect and Spartans were forced to defend aggressively for long periods. The set piece was strong for both teams so it was clear from the outset that the result would be close and would be decided by pieces of individual brilliance. For Spartans that came in the form of veteran fly half Tom Hardy and, the always reliable, centre Andy Bushell, who both delivered when it mattered. Despite conceding, Cleobury continued to press hard and were only prevented from crossing the whitewash because of a gallant Spartans defensive display, led admirably by back row Will Sanders, who undoubtedly topped the tackle count.
Spartans look set for another difficult encounter this weekend with the visit of high flying Crewe and Nantwich.
