Spartans 43, Kidderminster 8.
Spartans signed off their home season with a determined effort against a lively Kidderminster side in pretty much ideal rugby conditions at Coppice Lane.
The visitors were very quickly out of the blocks and the opening ten minutes belonged to them as they made an early siege on the Spartan tryline, but the home defence just about held firm and all 'Kiddy could muster was a well struck penalty. As the post Annual Dinner hangovers started to disappear Spartans got up to speed and a ball threaded through the defence sat up very kindly for the backs to score, before the forwards added another through the scrum. Kiddy came back into the game with some excellent running and handling, but Spartans kept their eyes on four outstanding players and manged the threats well, before a turnover ball allowed Matthew Southam to race in for a 15 - 3 half time lead.
Once again it was Kidderminster who started the second half very quickly, and some excellent running and handling again tested the black scramble defence. Persistence paid off for the visitors who scored a fine try on the left, but the kick was missed and only a one-score gap remained. Spartans upped their game at just the right time and some remarkably sensible decisions backed up by some good combinations between forwards and backs put them back on the front foot. Despite competing well, 'Kiddy couldn't stop the flow and the try count rose as the pressure increased, with Spartans securing a bonus point try before adding three more at regular intervals. The visitors kept their attack going at a lively pace and the Men In Black could never relax, but lady luck stayed with the home side and the game finished with Spartans worthy winners and a flattering scoreline.
This week Spartans play their penultimate fixture with yet another tough test at Leek.
